MUHAJIR (THE IMMIGRANT SONGS - 2020)

Canadian Pakistani rocker Urvah Khan celebrates ten years of smashing musical boundaries by returning to her mother tongue. Her fifth release, “Muhajir,” is the first sung in Urdu, Pakistan’s official language. “It was difficult cutting through my ‘Scarborough’ accent..” Khan recalls, referring to the Canadian suburb where she spent many formative years. “I hope folks back in Pakistan find it charming, not ridiculous!” “Muhajir,” meaning “immigrant,” was chosen as the title, for what seemed to Khan to be a difference in how she as a naturalized Canadian felt valued here, verses negative attitudes held toward Muslim immigrants moving between India and Pakistan after the separation in 1947. “‘Muhajir’ is not a nice term,” says Khan, “let’s liberate it. I was welcomed here, let’s spread the love.”
